Troubleshooting

✓ Lab-tested 4 November 2026 on Debian 13.7, FRR 10.3 (Debian package), FRR 10.2.1 (upstreams), nftables 1.1.3, systemd 257

Most FRR problems on Linux are one of three things: the session isn't up, the route isn't accepted, or the route is in FRR but traffic still goes elsewhere. Work in that order.

SymptomCheckUsual cause
Session stuck in Active or Connectvtysh -c "show bgp summary"; nft list chain inet filter input; tcpdump -ni eth0 tcp port 179Firewall dropping TCP 179, wrong neighbour address, no route to the neighbour
Session Idle (Admin)show bgp summaryneighbor … shutdown left in the configuration
Idle (PfxCt) after a burst of routesshow bgp neighbors <ip>The peer exceeded maximum-prefix
No routes from a peer, session upshow bgp ipv4 neighbors <ip> received-routes vs routesThe import route map or prefix list rejects them; or there's no route map at all (FRR accepts and sends nothing on an eBGP session without a policy, unless no bgp ebgp-requires-policy)
Your prefix isn't announcedshow bgp ipv4 neighbors <ip> advertised-routes; ip routeNo exact route in the table for the network statement (add the blackhole), or the export route map
OSPF neighbour missingshow ip ospf interface eth2; the input chain's counterFirewall dropping protocol 89, area or network type mismatch, interface not in OSPF
Route in FRR, but not in the kernelshow ip route; ip routeZebra couldn't install it (look for r or q codes and journal errors), or the daemon isn't enabled in daemons
Traffic still goes out the wrong ISPip route get <address>Local preference not set as you think; a static route or another table winning
Incoming traffic lost for minutes after a link failureThe upstream's view: Last resetThe upstream waits for its hold timer: use BFD or lower timers
Your config comments vanishedhead /etc/frr/frr.confwrite memory rewrote the file
systemctl reload frr failsjournalctl -u frrNo frr-pythontools on Debian 13: restart instead, or use FRR's own repository
